145,328 confirmed infections, 9,897 deaths

According to the Health Ministry’s latest coronavirus update, Brazil has recorded 53,739 new Covid-19 cases and 3,568 deaths since last Friday — bringing the total figures to 145,328 and 9,897, respectively. On Friday, the country recorded the highest number of new deaths (751) since the pandemic arrived in Brazil. 


4.2 million infections

A study carried out by Brazilian researchers concludes that Brazil’s actual number of coronavirus infections could be over 4.2 million — or 28 times higher than the official count. “Although measures taken so far have reduced the number of transmissions, the data suggest that the epidemic continues to increase exponentially in all 16 Brazilian states analyzed,” Ricardo Schnekenberg, of the University of Oxford’s...
