On her NPR podcast On Point, American journalist Jane Clayson argues that our Google search history shows who we really are. After all, as soon as a question pops into our heads, we type it into Google’s search bar – and that goes even for the subjects we don’t dare to share with other people.

Here in Brazil, the top overall searches cover a wide range of topics, from the catchy pop hit Despacito to reality TV to Hurricane Irma. So, what kind of insight does Google’s annual “Year in Search” tell us about Brazilians?

First, that Brazilians are obsessed with TV shows. Our top overall search term was “Big Brother Brasil”, the reality show which involves a dozen attractive young adults being confined in a house for weeks on end and the conflict that entails. Each week, one contestant is eliminated by the public, and the winner walks away with 2 million BRL. The number of searches for Brazilian Big Brother was so significant that it surpassed the number of times Game of Thrones was googled worldwide.

There was one sole surprise: the term “O Chamado” (the calling), for which there could be two explanations. The first is that O Chamado is the Brazilian title for the horror franchise “The Ring”, while the second is the fact that Google placed an “Easter egg” corresponding to that term. When Android phone users searched for O Chamado, their phone’s flashlight would switch on.

Furthermore, the Google report shows that Brazilians use the search engine to find out tax information and how to cook specific recipes. Oh, and if you didn’t know already, Brazilians love football, too.

Here are the report’s main findings:
