Meta tells electoral courts it no longer has incriminating Bolsonaro video

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, told Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court that it no longer has on its servers a video posted — and quickly deleted — by former President Jair Bolsonaro on January 10. The video would be used as a key piece of evidence to incriminate the far-right politician in an investigation into whether he incited an antidemocratic uprising earlier this year.

On January 8, hordes of far-right militants stormed and vandalized government buildings. It was the most severe attack on Brazilian democratic institutions since the end of the military dictatorship, in the 1980s. 

Two days later, Mr. Bolsonaro posted a video on Facebook that contained lies about the voting system — saying that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had been chosen by the electoral courts, not the people. He deleted the post from his Facebook account moments later.

Despite deleting the video, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes included the former president in a list of people suspected of playing a key role in inciting the riots.
