Governors update: the final polls of the state races

While the international press has followed the presidential race closely, state disputes have been all but ignored. Not by us. Here at The Brazilian Report, we break down the state of play in all of the main regions of Brazil, just two days before the election.

A polarization similar to that observed in the national race is being reproduced in local races. Of the 28 candidates for governor, 16 have declared their support to far-right presidential frontrunner Jair Bolsonaro – while only three have associated themselves with Workers’ Party candidate Fernando Haddad. The rest have remained neutral.

In the 13 states where the race was decided in the first round, however, Mr. Haddad had the support of seven winners. All of them in the Northeast, the Workers’ Party traditional stronghold – and the only region in which Mr. Haddad is polling better...
