Explaining Brazil Podcast #1: Rio’s federal intervention

You’ve grown accustomed to reading The Brazilian Report‘s content online. Now, we’re bringing you our latest project: Explaining Brazil, a weekly podcast. We will talk about the most pressing issues in Brazil, ranging from politics, to economics, to social issues. Our first installment tackles the federal intervention in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazilian President Michel Temer announced on February 16 that the Armed Forces would intervene in Rio de Janeiro’s security system. The intervention plan has several political implications – and multiple question marks hang over the motives behind the measure. Journalists Gustavo Ribeiro, Diego Iraheta, and Ciara Long comment on what could happen to Rio and Brazil moving forward.

Gustavo Ribeiro has extensive experience covering Brazilian politics and international affairs. His work has been featured across Brazilian and French media outlets, including VejaÉpocaFolha de São PauloMédiapart and Radio France Internationale. He is the recipient of multiple awards, including the Abril Prize for outstanding political journalism. He holds a master’s degree in Political Science and Latin American studies from Panthéon-Sorbonne University in Paris.

Diego Iraheta is the editor-in-chief of HuffPost Brazil. He holds a master’s degree in Digital Media from the University of Sussex in England. Diego has worked in nearly every kind of media ranging from newspapers to the radio, television, and Internet.

Ciara Long is a journalist based in Rio de Janeiro. Her articles have appeared in World Politics ReviewCBC NewsPRI and Narratively, and she has also contributed for The New York Times. She focuses on human rights, culture and politics.
