Welcome to “Number of the Week,” where we choose a single figure that helps understand what is going on in Brazil. This week, we show that the black population in Brazil still has the worst-paying jobs and lowest monthly income.
The Brazilian labor market has historically been characterized by low income, high inequality, and a pronounced heterogeneity between economic activities, which also results in considerable variation in wages. And the Covid-19 pandemic has only accentuated these characteristics, especially regarding racial inequalities.
According to a report by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) published this Friday, in 2020, black people were still the most disadvantaged in the labor market, constituting the majority of the unemployed in the country. In addition, this group also represented the largest share of the underemployed and received the lowest monthly income in Brazil.
