World Bank: Brazil to grow less than Latin American peers

For this year, the country is expected to grow 5.3 percent and 1.7 percent in 2022, the lowest in all of the region

Welcome to the “Number of the Week,” where we choose a single figure that helps understand what’s going on in Brazil. This week, the World Bank says Brazil will have the most modest GDP growth in all of Latin America next year.

About a year and six months after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the World Bank is beginning to improve its economic expectations for Latin America – severely affected by the health crisis – both for this year and the next. And even though Brazil follows this trend of improvement, the financial institution believes the country’s growth will lag behind the region’s average.

In its report, the World Bank forecasts that Brazil’s GDP will be considerably more modest than the rest of Latin America. For this year, the country is expected to grow 5.3 percent and 1.7 percent in 2022, the lowest in all of the region. Six months ago, the bank’s forecasts were of 4.5 and 2.5 percent growth, respectively.
