Boric struggles to capture the center ahead of constitutional referendum
The campaign to approve or reject Chile’s new constitutional draft was officially launched last week, after the Constitutional Assembly formally presented its draft, with an exit referendum scheduled for September 4. Proponents of the reform have a tall task ahead of them, as the new charter has continued to bleed supporters among moderates and the political center.
Why it matters. Massive street protests in 2019 led to the proposal to draft a new Constitution. But the country is not convinced with the result of the Assembly’s work.
State of play. The left-leaning convention drafted a Constitution that would bring deep reforms to nearly every aspect of public life, from social security, healthcare,...
