The campaign officially starts
The 2022 electoral campaign starts on Tuesday, when candidates will be allowed to explicitly solicit votes. To a large extent, the milestone brings little change, as politicians have been in campaign mode for months. But ads on social media and rallies will become even more ubiquitous.
State of play. Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva remains the favorite to win the race, according to all polls. But President Jair Bolsonaro has slowly narrowed the gap between them — and the possibility of him forcing a runoff election seems more possible now than it was a couple of months ago.
Polling differences. All pollsters agree that Lula and Mr. Bolsonaro are the only two people with a chance of winning the presidency. But their odds have varied from survey to survey.
