Using foreign ambassadors to create havoc
President Jair Bolsonaro will host foreign ambassadors this afternoon at his residence in BrasÃlia. The invitation didn’t specify the reason for the meeting, but Mr. Bolsonaro told supporters that he plans to “set the record straight” about the electoral process.
- The invitation comes in response to a meeting held by Supreme Court Justice Edson Fachin — who presides over the electoral court system — with 70 ambassadors in May to “warn” the diplomatic community about threats to Brazilian democracy.
Why it matters. Aiming at a domestic audience, the president is using foreign diplomats to lend airs of legitimacy to his push to question the integrity of Brazil’s voting system. (Mr. Bolsonaro himself has admitted to not having any proof of his claims that Brazilian elections are rigged.)
