Government announces new debt relief program
Caixa, the biggest public bank in Brazil, announced a debt relief scheme for over 4 million clients. “This is an important program to help people with hardships get a fresh start,” said Daniella Marques, the head of the bank.
By the numbers. Caixa says clients can get up to 90 percent discounts on their overdue liabilities. Over 80 percent of the clients eligible for the program will be able to liquidate their debts by paying up to BRL 1,000 (USD 192).
Context. Caixa has designed similar programs since at least 2019, the first year of the Jair Bolsonaro administration. But they usually came earlier in the year. In 2020, for example, it was announced in September.
