Bad timing to auction Brazil’s second-busiest airport
The federal government will today hold an auction of the rights to run 15 airports spread across Brazil. The list — which includes São Paulo-Congonhas Airport, Brazil’s second-busiest — is separated into three groups, lumping more attractive assets in with less desirable ones.
Why it matters. The airports to be auctioned account for 15.8 percent of Brazil’s passenger traffic and are expected to raise BRL 7.3 billion (USD 1.4 billion) in investments.
- After the auction, over 91 percent of Brazilian passengers will travel through airports under private administration.
State of play. The group of assets including Congonhas has been the most anticipated of the bunch, since the government launched its program to privatize infrastructure assets in February 2021.
