How massive the Brazilian election is
The Brazilian election campaign officially gets underway today. On October 2, in just under seven weeks, Brazilians will elect their president for the next four years, as well as 27 governors, an equal number of senators, 513 congresspeople, and over 1,000 state lawmakers.
Why it matters. It is easy to lose sight of how massive an affair Brazilian general elections really are, so here are some interesting figures to put it into perspective:
Younger and more diverse. Voting is mandatory in Brazil, except for those aged 70 and above or between 16 and 18 years old. However, this year, there will be more 16 and 17-year-olds registered to vote than ever.
