Organizations present pro-democracy manifestos
The University of São Paulo Law School will today host demonstrations in favor of the rule of law and against democratic backsliding and President Jair Bolsonaro’s attacks against the voting system.
- Two manifestos will be read — one penned by legal scholars and co-signed by over 910,000 people, and another put forward by Fiesp, a federation of São Paulo industrialists.
Why it matters. The documents unite groups that are often not on the same side on multiple issues, such as members of academia and bankers.
History. Forty-five years ago, the university’s scholars read the so-called “Letter to Brazilians,” which called out the military dictatorship as an illegitimate regime and urged for the return of democracy.
