Scoop: Bolsonaro to drop ambassadorship nomination to UAE
The Foreign Affairs Ministry will withdraw the nomination of Brazil’s Defense Products Secretary Marcos Degaut to an ambassadorship in the United Arab Emirates. The move is somewhat surprising, considering Mr. Degaut’s successes in increasing arms and ammunition exports to the UAE.
- The pick had been controversial as Mr. Degaut is not a career diplomat. But his tenure as secretary has received praise even among his detractors.
- The nomination came in April, but the Senate has never scheduled Mr. Degault’s confirmation hearing.
Why it matters. In 2022, the UAE was Brazil’s third-largest destination for arms and ammunition exports, just behind the U.S. and the Philippines. (The Brazilian Report revealed in January that many of these weapons are produced by a shady Turkish-owned company in southern Brazil.)
