Brazil to lead the UN Security Council
Brazil will take over the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council today, making the country responsible for the council’s agenda over the next month. It also gives it the prerogative to hold so-called “signature events,” offering an opportunity to showcase foreign policy interests and goals.
Why it matters. The UN’s top body, the Security Council, is the only agency in the organization that can impose sanctions on member countries and authorize the use of force, including for peacekeeping operations.
