Bolsonaro caters to farmers
President Jair Bolsonaro is set to announce the 2022/2023 Harvest Plan, a rural credit program to assist farmers in making investments and financing their operations. This year’s budget will top BRL 320 billion (USD 60.7 billion) — a record even when the amounts of previous years are adjusted for inflation.
Why it matters. The increase of almost 15 percent after inflation from last year makes sense, as agricultural inputs such as fertilizers have gotten much more expensive in recent months. But it is also an opportunity for President Jair Bolsonaro to cater to a cluster of loyal supporters.
