Canada opens doors to Brazilian meat
“Great news for our agro industry. Canada, one of the most important markets in the world, has authorized beef and pork imports from Brazil,” Brazilian Agriculture Minister Tereza Cristina tweeted on Monday.
Why it matters. Brazilian meat is now able to export to over 200 markets worldwide.
Between the lines. Authorization is only valid for meat processing plants under federal inspection in the southern state of Santa Catarina, the only area of Brazil to be free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination at the time of the initial request. Negotiations continue over other areas which now have the same recognition by the World Organization for Animal Health.
- Still, Santa Catarina accounts for over half of Brazilian pork exports, according to the ABPA, a lobby for meat producers.
Trade. Data from the Agriculture Ministry shows that Brazilian agricultural exports amounted to USD 10.5 billion last month, a 66-percent increase from a year prior. The results obliterated the previous record for the month, of USD 6.8 percent in 2019.
