Supreme Court reaches majority on police lethality trial
The Supreme Court is expected to conclude a trial today concerning ground rules for police operations in Rio de Janeiro, with the bench already reaching a majority on four issues to reduce the number of deaths caused by law enforcement. They are:
- The presentation of a lethality reduction plan within 90 days, with specific KPIs and deadlines;
- The creation of an oversight committee on proximity policing;
- Giving priority to investigations of operations involving underage casualties;
- Making it mandatory for ambulances to be present when confrontation between the police and criminal groups is deemed a possibility.
Still to go. With five of the 11 justices still scheduled to vote, other measures remain upended, such as the use of body cameras and GPS trackers on officers and limits to house raids.
