Bolsonaro to appoint new whip in Congress
President Jair Bolsonaro has signaled to his closest advisors that he wishes to appoint Senator Alexandre Silveira as the government’s new whip in Congress.
Who is he? Mr. Silveira only got his seat in the Senate in December, after replacing a lawmaker elected by his peers to a lifelong seat on the Federal Accounts Court. But despite his status as a newcomer, the soon-to-become whip is not short of connections.
- In 2018, he managed the campaign of Senator Rodrigo Pacheco, who one year ago was elected to preside over the upper house. He then shadowed Mr. Pacheco as an aide, and was designated to keep the books of shady budgetary grants the government uses to elicit support from politicians.
