Civil servant rebellion puts government on alert
Last week, tax auditors at the Federal Revenue Service went on strike in an attempt to force the government to grant them a pay raise. Roughly 93 percent of branch leaders have joined the movement and stepped down from their roles. Now, public servants from other government agencies are following suit.
- On Monday, civil servants at the Central Bank have begun resigning from leadership positions. Although there is no data on how many of the 500 people in commissioned posts have joined the strike’s ranks, one union claims to have received pledges from 1,200 servants unwilling to fill in these positions.
- Federal employees working in planning and budget areas also voted to halt activities on January 18 during a Monday assembly. They join an initiative organized by a union representing workers from 37 government sectors who demand better pay.
