Health Ministry systems down after hack
The Health Ministry was targeted by a group of hackers in the early hours of the day, and all of its systems — containing health and vaccination data on millions of patients — remain unavailable at the time of publication.
Ransomware. Websites administered by the ministry displayed a message by a hacker group saying “over 50 TB of data is copied from the cloud [sic] and intranet systems over the past weeks and has been erased.”
- The group included contact information for administrators to retrieve the data, probably by paying a ransom.
Vulnerable. This is not the first time government systems have been successfully attacked.
- Last year, work in Brazil’s second-highest judicial body was halted for more than a week after its servers were broken into.
- In February of this year, hackers published an ad selling 270 million social security records on the dark web.
- In August 2021, the Treasury Department was also hacked.
