Under fire, Amazonas governor to skip deposition
A Supreme Court justice issued a provisional habeas corpus to Amazonas Governor Wilson Lima, who is scheduled to appear before the Senate’s Covid hearings committee today. The ruling is the Brazilian equivalent of pleading the fifth, and also allows Mr. Lima to skip the deposition altogether — which his lawyer says he plans to do.
Why it matters. Wilson Lima was set to be the first of nine state governors brought before the Covid inquiry. Pro-government senators hope to pin the blame for shortcomings in the country’s pandemic response on these state administrators, in order to exonerate President Bolsonaro.
