The eyes of the world are turned to the U.S.-hosted climate summit that begins today and will be attended by heads of state from around the globe. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will deliver a three-minute speech in which he will try to change his image as an international climate bogeyman. He is likely to repeat the pledge he made last week to end illegal deforestation by 2030 and make Brazil carbon neutral by 2060.
Why it matters. The Brazilian government has changed its stance on climate issues, from flat-out denialism to demanding developed nations send billions of dollars in aid to pay for actions to curb deforestation.
