Pandemic: One year of Covid-19 in Brazil
The first coronavirus infection in Brazil was diagnosed on February 25, 2020. Since then, the country recorded 10.3 million other cases and a staggering 250,000 deaths. Barring colonization and slavery — which lasted for centuries — the Covid-19 pandemic is the deadliest event in Brazilian history. Besides the sheer human loss, it has thrown millions below the poverty line and taken a huge toll on Brazilians’ mental health. According to different studies, 40 percent of the population detected signs of depression over the past 12 months, and 80 percent became more anxious.
Why it matters. Perhaps the only thing worse than the total of 250,000 deaths is that Brazil still cannot see a way out of the crisis.
