Brazil created 155,200 new formal employment positions in January, with 1,777,646 admissions and 1,622,468 dismissals, according to latest figures from the General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons (Caged), published by the Labor Ministry.
The employment numbers indicate a slowdown in January compared to the same month of last year — when 254,300 jobs were created — but the result came in above analysts’ expectations.
The sector that most contributed to job creation was services, with 102,000 admissions, followed by industry (51,400), and construction (36,800). Trade, in turn, had a negative balance of 60,000 jobs during the first month of the year.
January performed better than December last year, when the country lost 265,811 formal jobs. And in the first month of 2022, the average entry-level salary was BRL 1,920.59, 6.38 percent more than in the previous month.
