Covid hearings: former Rio governor to give deposition behind closed doors

The Senate’s Covid-19 inquiry will proceed with the deposition of former Rio Governor Wilson Witzel, allowing him to provide further testimony in a behind-closed-doors session. Once an ally of President Jair Bolsonaro, Mr. Witzel is considered a key witness of the investigation into pandemic-related mismanagement within the federal government and Rio de Janeiro state administration.

Mr. Witzel was impeached earlier this year on corruption charges. In his first testimony on June 16, Mr. Witzel promised to hand over “very serious” evidence of wrongdoing, causing a frenzy in the Senate. The decision to allow a confidential hearing came amid protests from pro-Bolsonaro senators.
