Honduras announced a temporary suspension on arrivals from all South American countries, fearing the spread of the Brazilian coronavirus variant.
According to authorities of the country’s national risk management system, all individuals — including Honduran citizens — coming from South American nations will be turned away at airports. The decision was made after a case of the P.1. variant was recorded in Panama, which has also banned flights from South America.
Cases of the Brazilian variant have been found in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Venezuela, turning Brazil into a regional concern, according to the World Health Organization.
During March, Brazil became the country with the second-highest number of travel restrictions around the world. Neighboring countries have also sought to increase land border restrictions to contain the spread of the variant.
