Colombian president cancels Brazil trip due to pandemic

Colombia’s right-wing President Iván Duque has canceled a scheduled visit to Brasília on March 23, due to the uncontrolled situation of the coronavirus pandemic in Brazil. Mr. Duque was expected to meet with President Jair Bolsonaro, but the trip has been postponed for three months.

Colombia has already closed its air borders with Brazil due to fears over the Amazon coronavirus variant. Furthermore, the Colombian delegation would have to observe a 14-day quarantine on return from Brazil, which led to the postponement.

The first country in Latin America to receive vaccines from the UN-backed COVAX aid, Colombia announced this week that a 2.2-million-dose shipment from Pfizer will arrive in April. As of March 12, more than 400,000 people in Colombia have received a coronavirus vaccine.
