The São Paulo state government suspended the 2021 São Paulo state football championship and all state-level sporting events from March 15 until the end of the month. The decision was confirmed by Governor João Doria.
Yesterday, the São Paulo football federation said it was against suspending sporting events, claiming that it has put “all health protocols into practice.” First division clubs will meet this afternoon to discuss further details.
The suspension comes as São Paulo reaches an intensive care unit occupancy rate of 82 percent, while 32 municipalities in the state have suffered a complete collapse of their local hospital networks. Now, São Paulo joins Acre, Paraná, and Santa Catarina states by canceling its local football tournament.
According to news website UOL, the São Paulo football federation is analyzing whether it could transfer matches to Rio de Janeiro.
