On March 8, South American football confederation Conmebol announced that a Copa Libertadores qualifying match between Brazilian side Grêmio and Peru’s Ayacucho will be moved to the Ecuadorian capital Quito.
To contain the spread of the Brazilian coronavirus variant, Peru closed its air borders with Brazil.
On the international stage, Conmebol canceled a series of World Cup qualifying matches set to take place later this month. The Brazilian national team was scheduled to play Colombia in Barranquilla on March 23, but a flight ban on visitors from Brazil would have led to the match’s cancellation, regardless of Conmebol’s decision.
In Brazil, several state-level championships have already canceled matches due to the coronavirus crisis. The national football confederation, however, refused to impose a blanket ban on matches.
