Paraguay is facing its worst days of the coronavirus pandemic. According to Dr. Roque Silva, director of the 11th National Health Region, 1,032 people were hospitalized due to Covid-19 on March 2, with 257 of them occupying ICU beds leaving only 609 available

“Never since the start of the pandemic have we had more than 1,000 hospitalizations,” said Dr. Silva said, blaming the peak of cases on Paraguayans’ lack of responsibility regarding health protocols.

Worsening scenario

Though Paraguay began its vaccination program on February 22, immunization is only being offered to frontline health workers. Meanwhile, coronavirus cases are constantly increasing, with March on course to be Paraguay’s worst month since the beginning of the pandemic.

In April 2020, the country prematurely celebrated that all of its ICU beds were empty. After initial peaks in the middle of the year, the situation became increasingly worse, especially in Brazilian border regions.
