Senator José Maranhão died on Monday, after complications due to a severe case of Covid-19. At 87, he was Brazil’s oldest lawmaker and previously served as governor and lieutenant governor of his home state of Paraíba, as well as being a state and federal representative. He was a member of the Constitutional Assembly, which marked the end of the military dictatorship and helped draft the 1988 Constitution.

Mr. Maranhão had been in intensive care since November 29 with a severe case of Covid-19. He is the second senator to fall victim to the coronavirus, after Arolde de Oliveira of Rio de Janeiro died in October 2020.

The Senate declared official mourning and canceled its deliberative session scheduled for today.
