The governors of nine states in the Amazon region published a joint letter asking the federal government to reactivate Covid-19 intensive care units paid for by the public health system (SUS). They highlight the challenges of “underfunding during the decisive months of fighting the pandemic.”

The group of governors also asked for a new cash-transfer program to replace the extinct coronavirus emergency salary. Since the program expired, over 2 million Brazilians fell below the poverty line, leaving 13 percent of the Brazilian population with an income of no more than BRL 250 (USD 46) per month.
