The UN-backed COVAX initiative will begin shipping 35.3 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines to 36 countries and territories in the Americas in February, according to the Pan American Health Organization. The process should extend throughout the second quarter of 2021.
The majority of the shots will be provided by AstraZeneca, but Pfizer and BioNTech will supply 378,000 jabs to Bolivia, Colombia, El Salvador, and Peru. As we revealed in our February 1 Daily Briefing, Brazil should receive between 10 and 14 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine in February, according the Health Ministry. Those not produced by India’s Serum Institute will need approval for emergency use from health regulator Anvisa.
Mexico’s chancellor Marcelo Ebrar has also confirmed the country will receive doses from the consortium in February and March, but the amounts are still pending confirmation.
To curb the spread of Covid-19, it is estimated that Americas will need to vaccinate at least 500 million people.
