Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou will meet with President Jair Bolsonaro on February 3 to discuss bilateral relations and combined efforts against the coronavirus pandemic.

This will be Mr. Lacalle Pou’s first international trip as head of state after taking office in March 2020.

A meeting between the two leaders was supposed to take place in Uruguay on January 13, but Mr. Bolsonaro canceled his trip as the healthcare system in the city of Manaus collapsed due to a surge of coronavirus infections.

Uruguay goes back to partial border closure

Mr. Lacalle Pou said that the Brazil-Uruguay border will once again be partially closed, as was the case until December 20. Authorities in Montevideo had enhanced controls during the holiday season — as Brazilian tourists flocked to Uruguayan beaches — but have rolled back some of the restrictions for crossing into the country.
