With the entire country on high alert after witnessing the healthcare collapse in Manaus last week, Brazil’s most populous state, São Paulo, has recorded its highest number of new Covid-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

Between January 10 and 16, a total of 79,106 new cases were confirmed in São Paulo, surpassing the previous record for a single week, previously standing at 75,799 in mid-August. “In terms of case numbers, this was our worst week,” said Jean Gorinchteyn, São Paulo’s state health secretary, in a press conference this morning.

The 7-day rolling average of new deaths in the state hit 230 today, making it the worst result since August 23. There have been a total of 1,628,272 confirmed coronavirus cases in the state, with 49,987 deaths.
