Covid-19 is biggest reason for workers’ leave

Covid-19 infections accounted for one in every ten work-related accidents registered in Brazil during Q3 2020, according to the National Social Security Institute (INSS). The disease forced 10,800 workers to go on leave between July and September — 246 percent more than the previous quarter.

The worst-affected professionals were, naturally, health workers (6,200). People employed in meat processing factories outside of major urban centers followed in second (2,800).

Seventy-three percent of health workers who filed for leave were women, as they make up over 80 percent of Brazil’s nurses, nursing assistants, and nursing technicians.
