The state government of São Paulo received its first shipment of 120,000 doses of CoronaVac today, a potential Covid-19 vaccine developed by Chinese lab Sinovac Biotech. Weekly shipments are expected to continue until reaching a total of 6 million doses sent from China by the end of the year.

The CoronaVac is at the center of a political dispute between São Paulo Governor João Doria and President Jair Bolsonaro — each trying to use the pandemic to boost their own electoral stock.

CoronaVac needs to pass final tests and receive authorization from the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) before being distributed to the population — preliminary studies suggest it has been effective in 97 percent of trial participants.
