According to Brazil’s Economy Ministry, workers who had their working hours and wages reduced during the pandemic are to receive the entirety of their Christmas bonus salary, known in Brazil as the “13th salary.”
However, employees who had their contracts suspended will have their bonuses cut proportionally to the time they were out of work. For instance, if a worker had his/her contract suspended for four months, their Christmas bonus will be cut by one-third.
At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, Brazil’s lower house of Congress approved a bill allowing employers to reduce wages and working hours during the health crisis. The government compensated part of workers’ losses, up to the amount of unemployment insurance they would have received had they been laid off.
