São Paulo building Latin America’s first Covid-19 vaccine factory

São Paulo Governor João Doria announced on Monday that construction has begun on Latin America’s first factory to produce a vaccine against Covid-19.

Located on the premises of the Butantan Biological Institute in São Paulo, the structure will have the capacity to produce 100 million vaccines a year, and construction is funded entirely by private money. According to Mr. Doria, works began on November 2 and the facility is expected to be ready by September 2021.

In addition, in a press conference, the São Paulo Governor said that the first 120,000 doses of the CoronaVac vaccine — developed by Chinese company Sinovac — will arrive on November 20, part of the first batch of 6 million doses cleared by Brazilian health regulators Anvisa in October.

However, they may only be distributed after the conclusion of clinical trials and subsequent Anvisa approval.
