Brazil has recently surpassed 80,000 Covid-19 deaths, pushing an average of around 1,000 new fatalities every day. While the numbers are shocking, the length of the pandemic and intense news coverage may trick citizens into a zone of comfort, stopping them from fully understanding the scale of the pandemic.
To provide this sense of scale, fact-checking agency Lupa launched an interactive tool that simulates the user’s neighborhood as the epicenter of the disease. After inserting a postal code, users can follow the increase of the pandemic as if it were concentrated around their home neighborhood.
“The objective of ‘At the epicenter’ is to show the user, based on known references, the extent of the country’s epidemic. Though the result of the simulation is not an exact reflection of reality, positioning the victims around the user is a way of bringing tragedy closer to the perception of each person,” says Lupa, in the introduction to the tool.
At the epicenter was made in partnership with the Google News Initiative and will be updated daily.
