Guarulhos Airport in São Paulo has announced that it will begin measuring the body temperatures of passengers using a hi-tech system of heat-sensing cameras controlled by artificial intelligence. The system is able to run roughly 5,000 simultaneous temperature checks in just 30 minutes. For the time being, it will only be used in the airport’s Terminal 2, which almost exclusively processes domestic flights. Those who embark and arrive in Terminal 3 — reserved for international flights — will still have their temperatures measured individually by the airport’s medical staff.
The number of daily flights coming in and out of Brazil’s busiest aviation hub has been drastically reduced in recent months, but some routes are gradually returning. Domestic carrier Azul will resume its services flying out of Guarulhos as of July 6, offering flights to Recife, Porto Alegre, Cuiabá, and Belo Horizonte.
British Airways had also announced that it would resume its passenger services from São Paulo to London as of June 29, but the company quickly backtracked and will continue operating solely cargo flights between the two destinations for the time being.
