São Paulo-based Sírio Libanês Hospital and private lab Mendelics teamed up to launch a new Covid-19 test to identify the virus using technology that reaches a reported 100-percent accuracy and prevents contamination.
The test works by collecting patients’ saliva samples, instead of nasal swabs, solving two problems at once: the lack of cotton buds used to take samples and the exposure of health professionals. By this method, patients can collect and submit their own samples.
The results can be available within an hour, according to the institutions, and the test costs BRL 95 — more affordable than any other option in the market. Mendelics aims to process 110,000 samples on a daily basis and trials are underway with 50,000 patients. While the test’s processing will happen in São Paulo, the goal is to apply them all over Brazil, granting doctors’ access to the results via an internal system.
