Rio de Janeiro Governor Wilson Witzel authorized the partial reopening of an array of economic activities in the state, starting this Saturday. The decision authorizes the opening of commercial centers, bars, restaurants, parks, and tourist attractions — including Sugarloaf Mountain and the Christ the Redeemer statue. Religious institutions are also authorized to reopen.

These places can only operate at 50 percent capacity and must offer hand sanitizer and enforce social distancing. Working hours will also be reduced. The closure of other activities was extended until at least June 21, including schools, gyms, and theaters.

The state of Rio de Janeiro is currently second in the number of Covid-19 cases and deaths nationwide — second only to São Paulo. Yesterday, it reported 2,134 new cases and 146 new deaths, reaching nearly 61,000 total cases and 6,329 deaths.
