Despite complaints from business owners and consumers who are impeded from crossing the border to shop in Paraguay, the neighboring country’s health authorities still see the situation in Brazil as too “chaotic” for borders to be reopened.

“We will wait until the wave in Brazil is over to start talking about reopening the border,” said Guillermo Sequera, head of the Paraguayan Health Surveillance Board. According to him, the decision to reopen will depend on the success in fighting the virus in the Brazilian border town of Foz do Iguaçu.

While Brazil reported nearly 31,000 new cases and 1,005 new deaths on Friday, Paraguay informed only one new case and no new deaths. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the country has registered only 11 deaths.
