Electoral data cannot be used for emergency aid payments

The Brazilian Superior Electoral Court has prohibited the government from using data from electoral registers in order to pay out the BRL 600 emergency salary to autonomous workers and vulnerable families. The move comes after people who formerly ran for office — but fit the eligibility criteria to receive the aid — were excluded from the program.

The move comes after people who formerly ran for office — but fit the eligibility criteria to receive the aid — were excluded from the program.

According to the Electoral Justice system, its data does not differentiate people who won public office from those who lost elections. Moreover, electoral databases are highly inaccurate, as most people never update their information after registering as voters for the first time.
