São Paulo’s Congonhas Airport is reopening for commercial flights for the first time since April 13. Over the last 6 weeks the second-busiest hub in Brazil was being used as an “airplane parking lot,” as the number of flights took a 90-plus-percent nosedive.
Latam will be the first airline to operate, offering four daily flights — two to Rio de Janeiro and two to Brasília. As we reported on May 19, Gol — the country’s largest domestic airline — will resume operations on May 24. Azul, which focuses operations at the Campinas Viracopos Airport (two hours west of São Paulo), is planning to fly from Congonhas again on June 15.
