Fraud attempts rise 18 percent on e-commerce during pandemic

As e-commerce blossoms amid Brazil’s period of social isolation, so have online scams. A survey by ClearSale, specialized in e-commerce fraud protection solutions, shows that fraud attempts increased 18 percent in the first 20 days of April, in comparison to the period between January 15 and February 20.

If successful, these scams could have led to losses for consumers of up to BRL 69 million.

Drugstores saw a 60-percent increase in fraud attempts, followed by magazines — 50 percent — and fashion retail — 25 percent. ClearSale recommends Brazilians use credit cards for buying online, as they allow consumers to retrieve money more easily in case of scams. As credit bureau Boa Vista shows, this is already the preferred payment method for online shopping of 71 percent of Brazilians.
