The city of São Paulo has begun partially blocking major avenues today, aiming at reducing the number of people breaking social isolation. The falling levels of adherence to distancing measures have concerned municipal authorities, who fear the municipal health system being overloaded by Covid-19 cases — especially as Brazil’s largest urban center must also absorb demand from citizens living in nearby cities.
The move, however, hasn’t worked. CNN Brasil showed footage of major tailbacks on the Radial Leste avenue this morning, which connects the city center to the densely populated East Zone.
The state of São Paulo has scheduled the reopening of its economy to begin on May 11 — but Governor João Doria, working alongside São Paulo Mayor Bruno Covas, has warned citizens that quarantine rules will be toughened unless social isolation rates remain consistently above 50 percent.
